John 9 shows us what happens when the true light shines on man. As the light, who is Jesus, shines, the works of God are displayed as well as the disposition of our hearts toward the world, religion, and social priorities (9:1-23). Likewise, our understanding of concepts like faith are illuminated. Faith is a word that one hears all the time, but it often is filled with excess baggage as far as what it means. We pack the word “faith” full of various meanings and significance, but when we look at John 9:24-41, Jesus exposes for us what faith is and what it does.
- Faith in Jesus does not require exhaustive knowledge about Jesus
- Unbelief claims exhaustive knowledge it cannot justify
- Faith communes with reason
- Faith is apprehension in the heart that precedes apprehension with the eyes
